Causes and symptoms of scoliosis

The main cause of scoliosis is a mismatch in the development of muscle and bone tissue in adolescence. This means that the bone skeleton is quickly removed, and muscle tissue does not have time to create a kind of supporting corset for him. This scoliosis is called idiopathic and is the most common. Provoking factor in the formation of the disease is carrying heavy objects in one hand.

Scoliosis is considered to be a disease of growth. However, if not treated in time, it can last a lifetime and eventually lead to serious complications.

The key symptoms of scoliosis are asymmetry of the body (different height of shoulders, shoulders, elbows, buttocks). Accompanying symptoms – immobility of the back, pain in the arms, shoulders, back and lower back, headaches, numbness of the arms and legs.

Types and stages of scoliosis

Depending on the magnitude of the spinal deformity, there are four degrees of scoliosis:

  • 1st degree scoliosis – deviation of the spine by 1-10 degrees
  • scoliosis of the 2nd degree – on 11 – 25 degrees
  • 3rd degree – 26 – 50 degrees
  • 4th degree – deviation of more than 50 degrees.

Thoracic scoliosis or thoracic scoliosis has the form of a right-sided arch. It suppresses breathing and can deform the chest, cause pulmonary insufficiency. Causes constant back pain and the rapid development of osteochondrosis.

As a rule, curvature of the spine is accompanied by displacements and rotation of the vertebrae, persistent muscle spasms, impaired blood circulation and congestion in the back.

Lumbar scoliosis is a curvature in the lumbar spine in the form of a left arch, dangerous for the development of osteochondrosis, protrusions and herniation of intervertebral discs. Lateral curvature of the spine in the lumbar region is called lumbar scoliosis. This disease can occur in children or adolescents and adults. In the second case, the provoking factors are osteochondrosis of the lumbar region, prolonged muscle spasms caused by a sedentary lifestyle, as well as pelvic skewness. The connection between the pelvic region and the lumbar region is mutual. This means that pelvic skew leads to the development of lumbar scoliosis and osteochondrosis, and curvature of the spine in the lumbar region – to pelvic skew. The primary reason for this may be a significant difference in length between the right and left leg, hard work associated with carrying heavy objects in one hand, hip dysplasia or significant deformity of the legs. On the other hand, a sedentary lifestyle, overweight, improper loads on the spine cause osteochondrosis, and then intervertebral hernias, which leads to pelvic skew and curvature of the spine in the lumbar region.

Spinal curvature in children in the lumbar region has the same common causes as thoracic scoliosis. This may be a congenital disorder of the anatomy of the spine – for example, lumbalization in which the number of sacral vertebrae is less than normal and the number of lumbar – above normal, or, conversely, sacralization, in which the number of lumbar vertebrae less than normal and sacral – above normal. Manifested by low back pain, rapid onset of fatigue and inability to stay in one position for a long time (sitting, standing), change of gait (lameness). Lumbar scoliosis provokes pinching of nerve roots in the spine, which is manifested by radiating pain in the leg and numbness.

Deformation of the spine in the lumbar region is usually well visible from the outside. This makes it possible to timely determine the curvature of the spine in children and conduct timely treatment. You should pay attention to such signs as pelvic skew, incorrect waist contours, different height and lowering of the shoulders, asymmetrical head position – these are the initial signs of lumbar scoliosis.

More pronounced symptoms are different heights and noticeable divergence of the shoulder blades. In this case, treatment of grade 2 scoliosis or more severe stages of the disease is required.

Spinal curvature in children is a problem that can be prevented in most cases. Particularly dangerous age – a period of rapid physical growth. Different children have it at different times. Some children grow up quickly in preschool and primary school age, others are drawn to the eyes at 11-14 years. Rapid growth means a rapid increase in skeletal height. However, the growth of muscle mass may lag behind, which is especially common when children sit for a long time at the computer or TV, play little mobile games, do not spend enough time in the air, on the move.

Improper posture at the table is another common cause of spinal curvature in children. When children write, draw, they often sit, leaning over the table and one shoulder forward. Over time, this leads to unilateral muscle hypertonia. After that, they are uncomfortable to keep their backs straight, they get tired quickly. Improper posture becomes habitual, the only possible, and muscle spasm becomes persistent. Uneven muscular load on the spine causes its curvature in children. If you start treatment for scoliosis in time, the situation can be corrected.

As a rule, scoliosis in adults has a more pronounced form and is almost always accompanied by pain. Therefore, the treatment of spinal scoliosis in adults has its own characteristics. The first thing to do is to eliminate pain in the back, lower back, neck. In the treatment of scoliosis in adults it is necessary to consider its cause. In some cases, it is the result of untreated juvenile or adolescent scoliosis, in others – the consequences of injury or disease of the spine.

In particular, scoliosis in adults is often accompanied by significant osteochondrosis or intervertebral hernia. This requires a special approach and comprehensive treatment.

Treatment is prescribed individually and promotes the natural development and strengthening of the muscular corset of the spine. Due to the complex impact, sustainable results are achieved. At scoliosis of the 1st and 2nd degree deformation of a backbone is corrected. The pain passes, the mobility of the back is completely restored, the asymmetry of the body disappears, complications are prevented. In the 3rd and 4th degrees it is possible to significantly alleviate the symptoms, reduce the amount of curvature and slow down or stop the development of the disease, significantly improve the quality of life.
