Breast Augmentation
Cosmetic breast surgery helps many women feel more comfortable and self-confident.
Factors such as the passage of time, breastfeeding, weight loss or diseases such as breast cancer, alter the size and shape of the breast, making it necessary to undergo breast augmentation surgery to solve it.
It is the ideal treatment for small breasts, asymmetric breasts or breasts with volume loss after breastfeeding.
In just one hour of breast augmentation surgery, with general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, the desired volume is achieved, with a natural feel and appearance.
The volume and shape of the breasts are genetically determined and can be considered to have finished their development at approximately 17-18 years of age. Throughout a woman’s life, the breasts present variations, increasing in volume in the premenstrual period and especially during pregnancy and lactation.
What does breast augmentation surgery consist of?
Breast augmentation surgery is a very simple intervention that allows you to increase volume by placing permanent breast implants. The intervention to increase breasts lasts about an hour and is performed in the operating room with general anesthesia, and in some cases with local anesthesia and sedation.
Breast plastic surgery is an outpatient surgery and allows normal life after a week. The technique for the introduction of the breast implant can be periareolar (the most common), axillary or submammary, and its placement can be behind the gland or behind the pectoral muscle.
The determination of the technique to be used is the decision of the surgeon in consensus with the patient after medical evaluation. Breast augmentation treatment is performed in our operating rooms by our own team of surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses in optimal safety conditions.
Are breast prostheses safe from breast plastic surgery to increase breasts?
This is the question that is on the mind of every woman who wants a breast augmentation operation. A large international study on silicone gel breast prostheses yielded the following conclusions about breast operations:
- The relationship between the placement of breast implants and the appearance of tumors is totally ruled out; that is to say that there is not a higher percentage of breast tumors in patients who have breast implants.
- Breast prostheses must pass a series of controls before their placement is authorized, which guarantees their quality.
- These prostheses have been used for about 30 years, and are preferred by plastic surgeons for bust operations, due to their good aesthetic and functional results.
- The Ministry of Health first authorized the use of these prostheses for breast reconstruction and finally in 1992, for all types of breast augmentation surgery. As a counterpart and to guarantee good information to the patient, offering the maximum security guarantees, a follow-up and control protocol was drawn up for patients undergoing breast augmentation.
- The mammary prostheses that were placed 15 years ago were monolaminar, that is, with a single cover, and their replacement was recommended after 15 years. Currently the prostheses that we use in breast operations are cohesive gel textured silicone implants. They have several layers, the latter are much more resistant than the primitive ones and the manufacturers do not agree on their duration, which in any case is much higher than the first ones.
- Capsular contracture is the excess formation of connective tissue created by the body around the breast prosthesis, reducing the space of the pocket where the prosthesis is housed. This complication has a very small incidence in breast operations and the causes that produce it are currently unknown. We take two measures in breast surgery to reduce this problem that have proven effective: the first is early manual lymphatic drainage (massage), and the second is the placement of textured or rough prostheses.
