Benign skin tumors
Benign tumors are growths that affect the skin but do not spread to other parts of the body (metastasize). They are generally considered harmless, but their removal may be advisable for cosmetic reasons. After all, even benign skin tumors can grow and become painful.

Skin tumors
In the course of skin cancer screening, your skin is carefully examined for suspicious growths. If it is unclear whether a discovered tumor is dangerous or not, a tissue sample provides information. Critical growths are removed as quickly as possible and treated further if necessary.
The most dangerous type of skin tumor is malignant melanoma. This form of skin cancer often spreads to other organs and can be fatal if it is not detected and treated in time. It therefore makes sense to examine moles on your body regularly for changes such as increased size or irregular edges and coloring. If you notice any such changes, please contact us – better sooner than later!
Depending on the type of skin tumor, symptoms may vary. What they have in common, however, is that they are often felt as a foreign body and can interfere with any activity because they rub against clothes or cause pain when pressure is applied. If you notice a change in your skin, you should consult a dermatologist as quickly as possible. He or she can identify the cause and initiate appropriate treatment if necessary.
Benign skin tumors

The term “tumor” is a collective term for all kinds of growths. A distinction is made between benign and malignant tumors.
The most common tumor of the skin is the so-called seborrheic wart, which can occur on any part of the body but is particularly common on the scalp. In contrast to other benign tumors, this tumor usually grows rapidly.
Also common are lipomas, which are fatty deposits that can occur anywhere in the body. They are soft and moveable under the skin. Lipomas are usually painless and do not pose a health risk unless they press on a nerve or blood vessel.
Other benign skin tumors include:
- fibroma (benign tumor of connective tissue)
- keratoacanthoma (tumor of hair follicle cells)
- papilloma (viral infection)
- angioma (tumor of blood vessels)
Treatment of skin tumors
Treatment depends on the type of tumor. Benign tumors can be removed surgically or frozen off with liquid nitrogen. Malignant growths are usually surgically removed, but may also be treated with medication or radiation therapy. If a malignant tumor has already metastasized and cancer cells have traveled to other parts of the body, systemic therapies such as chemotherapy (medication) or immunotherapy are used.
Skin cancer
Malignant tumors such as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma can be identified early and treated in time with a high rate of success. The key to preventing dangerous cancerous diseases is regular self-examinations and visits to the dermatologist for professional skin checks.
Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinomas usually appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck or hands — but they can develop anywhere on the body. They are more common in elderly people with fair skin than in younger people with darker skin tones. Squamous cell carcinomas often look like scaly spots that do.
