What is the intragastric balloon?

The intragastric balloon is an endoscopic treatment used since 2002 against overweight and obesity. Obesity is a disease that depends on several factors and its treatment must be carried out from a multidisciplinary approach.

The placement of the balloon is not done with a surgical intervention: the balloon is inserted through the mouth, by endoscopy. The procedure takes just 20 minutes and there are no incisions or external scars. The patient can return home the same day of the intervention.

Advantages of the Intragastric Balloon

The intragastric balloon offers different advantages over other treatments against obesity and overweight, among which are:

  • No incisions or external scars, minimally invasive.
  • Quick intervention (1 hour) and with all the guarantees.
  • Postoperative less painful and without admission.
  • It is reversible, the intragastric balloon is removed 6/7 months after treatment approx.

How does the intragastric balloon work?

The gastric balloon, also called Intragastric Balloon or by its acronym BIG, consists of an inflatable device that is inserted through the mouth by endoscopy. This means that the operation to insert the balloon is without hospital admission and lasts approx. 1 hour.

Once introduced, the intragastric balloon is swollen with a saline solution or serum, so that in the event of an accident (work, driving, etc.) nothing would happen to absorb the liquid, since it is a simple physiological serum.

The main advantage of the gastric balloon (or BIG IntraGastric Balloon) is that it is a very simple treatment, which does not require hospital admission, is performed without external surgery or incisions, and is also completely reversible.

For which patients is the intragastric balloon intended?

The intragastric balloon, an oral implantable treatment, is intended for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or higher. In any case, it is recommended to go to a specialist to determine which obesity treatment is best suited to each case. .

Intragastric balloon treatment is the first option, due to its speed, economy and comfort, for the rapid treatment of high excess weight.

Materials employed

The quality of the materials used is an important factor in the price of stomach reduction, both in an intragastric balloon and in the POSE and APOLLO methods.

Keep in mind that the price of an intragastric balloon cannot put your health at risk, since you will have to carry it in your stomach for 6 months.

At Obesidad López-Nava we work with the best laboratories and use award-winning materials at international congresses and fairs. The R+D+i of these laboratories makes them benchmarks in the sector and we do not put a price on the safety of our patients.

Extended information on the intervention of the Intragastric Balloon

The intragastric balloon stays in the stomach for a maximum of six months, after which it is removed again by endoscopy. The function of the balloon is to delay the feeling of hunger and reduce food intake during meals as the feeling of satiety occurs earlier.

It should not be forgotten that the intragastric balloon is only a complement and an aid within a broader comprehensive treatment. A multidisciplinary team (digestive system specialists, psychologists, nutritionists, etc.) monitors the patient for a period of two years.

The ultimate goal is not only weight loss but also for the patient to adopt healthy lifestyle habits so that they do not regain the lost weight and so that they improve their health and quality of life.
