A healthy and luminous smile with Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a dental aesthetic technique, it consists in the application of a resin compound on the enamel area and / or on the dentin and is used to give the smile a healthy and luminous image again.
“Bonding” comes from the English word “adhesion”, among other things the term is also used in psychology to mean the “bond” between parents and children.
A single convenient treatment to meet different needs
Dental bonding has become very popular, because it is one of the simplest, least expensive and most of all, least invasive treatments.
It is particularly suitable for carrying out slight aesthetic changes and is practiced on surfaces, such as for the anterior teeth, where the bite pressure is low.
Those who turn to the dental bonding technique usually do it to remedy chipped or broken teeth or to close grooves or fillings, as well as to cover stains or restore new light to the teeth.
Many also choose this treatment to give a new look to their smile by lengthening their teeth or eliminating unsightly small spaces inside the teeth.
In addition, for many customers it can be a valid alternative to amalgam.
Dental bonding is not only used in the aesthetic field but can also be used for protective purposes such as to protect the tooth root when the gums are now withdrawn.
Differences with other techniques
Some compare dental bonding to porcelain veneers, but the two techniques differ in cost and result.
Unlike dental bonding, aesthetic veneers are a more costly and time-consuming treatment as they require a custom-molded creation in the laboratory.
It should also be noted that teeth treated with dental bonding can stain more easily due to the porous coating adopted and that dental whitening on these teeth is also ineffective.
Dental bonding, a simple and non-invasive procedure
Dental bonding is certainly one of the least invasive dental aesthetic interventions because it requires less removal of the enamel and most of the time it does not require local anesthesia.
The process takes from 30 to 60 minutes. More than one session may be required to treat several teeth.
The treatment process involves some simple steps, which can be carried out during a single dental visit, we summarize them briefly:
- Orthopanoramic to examine the state of health of the teeth.
- Selection of the color closest to that of the tooth or teeth to be treated with the aid of a chromatic scale.
- Use of a slightly acidic substance (etching) to make the surface of the teeth rough and thus facilitate the adhesion of the sealants.
- Application of the resin-based composite (of the chosen shade) on the surface of the tooth or teeth prepared by the etchant.
- Shaping and smoothing of the material until the desired shape is reached.
- Hardening of the compound and adhesion through an ultraviolet light or laser.
- Further modeling and polishing.
And after the treatment?
How long does dental bonding last? Usually from 3 to 7 years old. Naturally, teeth treated with dental bonding require the same attention and care as natural teeth.
So, of course, good oral hygiene practice such as brushing, washing and flossing and a dental cleaning every 6 months must be followed.
However, particular care must also be taken as the resin compound used in dental bonding is not comparable in strength to a natural tooth.
Some “bad” habits such as nail biting or nibbling on plastic pens can damage the material. But also, some eating behaviors, such as drinking tea and coffee, or vicious ones, such as smoking cigarettes, can affect the duration and effectiveness of the treatment by staining the resin.
In this regard, it is important to underline that to prevent and avoid the formation of spots it is good to refrain from these behaviors at least for 48 hours after the treatment.
