What is a gastric balloon?

The gastric balloon is an alternative to bariatric surgery and is recommended for people with lower body mass indexes. Most patients lose between 20 and 50 pounds over a six-month period (about 10 to 20% of total body weight).

The gastric balloon can be effective, does not require surgery and can be inserted in minutes. However, they are a temporary solution and require lifestyle change, training and support to be successful.

Can I have a gastric balloon?

The gastric balloon was approved in the United States in 2015 for patients with BMI (Body Mass Index) from 30 to 40 who have not had previous weight loss surgery. Check your BMI.

3 types of gastric balloon

Your doctor can only recommend one type of gastric balloon. This may be due to the fact that it has not yet been trained / certified in other types of balloons. Do not hesitate to ask about other gastric balloon options when you meet your doctor.

OBALON

Obalon is the latest gastric capsule approved in the United States. There are two main differences between the other balloons.

  • The balloon is inserted through a pill that is swallowed with a glass of water.
  • It is inflated with air.

A total of 3 balloons are inserted. The second balloon is added one month after the first and the third is usually added during the second month.

RESHAPE DUAL WEIGHT LOSS BALLOON

Two balloons are inserted at the same time and under light anesthesia.

The characteristics of the Reshape double weight loss balloon are:

  1. larger capacity balloons compared to other gastric balloons.
  2. both balloons are inserted during a process. The next required procedure is only when the balloon is removed.
  3. a powerful mentoring and support program that includes:

A year of nutrition instructions and an online portal where you can connect with your activity.

Patients who actively participate in their program lose 100% more weight than those who do not, according to company data.

ORBERA

Orbera is the most popular, with more than 220,000 balloons being distributed worldwide and with many successful weight loss patients.

Realizing that support and lifestyle changes are the key to patient success, Orbera offers a range of tools to support their patients.

Orbera offers an application and guidance for 12 months after the procedure.

Although we prefer the Baritastic app, the Orbera app offers recipes and some other items that may be worth checking out.

They offer 1: 1 sessions with their dietitians along with group sessions.

The Obalon balloon is usually inserted by swallowing a pill with a little water and performing subsequent tests.

Reshape and Orbera balloons are placed under light anesthesia by endoscopy.

How do gastric balloons work?

Gastric balloons work in 2 ways to help you lose weight.

They reduce the available volume in your stomach for eating. The average stomach is 1.5 L in volume and the average gastric balloon occupies almost half of this space. This leaves about 60% of your stomach available for food. Of course you will not be able to eat as much at one time as you could before a gastric balloon was inserted.

The biggest benefit may be that the balloon restricts the free passage of food and water, essentially slowing its passage through your stomach, making you feel full faster and longer.
